“Down Home Blues”
with the legendary Linda Hopkins
.
Born in New Orleans, Hopkins was discovered at age eleven by Mahalia Jackson, and became very well known in her life time. She grew up singing and studying with the great Mahalia Jackson. Hopkins has long idolized Bessie Smith and won critical plaudits for her rendition of Smith in the theatrical presentation “Jazz Train”. She left New Orleans in the 50’s to become one of the great blues and gospel singers of our time. She has recorded classic, traditional, and urban blues, and performed R &B and soul, jazz, and showtunes, all with distinction and style.
She has starred in several musical revues including:
Me And Bessie, written by herself as a one-woman-show and as an homage to the great Blues singer Bessie Smith. The world premiere was in Los Angeles in 1974.
Also Black And Blue, written by Claudio Segovia and Hector Orezzoli. The world premiere was in Paris in 1985 and Wild Women Blues, written by Mel Howard. The world premiere was in Berlin in 1997.

2007 Grammy nominee Ignacio Berroa
Ignacio Berroa has been recognized by many as one of the greatest drummers of our times. His numerous contributions to the American music scene have earned him a place among a very selective group of artists known to have set new musical trends for the 20th century. Jazz Legend Dizzy Gillespie best defined Ignacio as:..."The only Latin drummer in the world, in the history of American music that intimately knows both worlds; his native Afro-Cuban music as well as Jazz. He will be performing music from “Codes”, his latest release.

 

Friday, February 16th
“Tough Texas Blues”
with blues legend Roy “Guitar” Gaines.
8:00 to 12:00 p.m.

He has toured and recorded with blues greats like Chuck Willis and Ray Charles and did session work for Bobby "Blue" Bland and Junior Parker. Roy's no stranger to the Hollywood scene either, lending his talents to the motion pictures "How Many Roads" and "The Color Purple."
In 1996 Gaines released the recording Lucille Works for Me. That release combined with Bluesman for Life (1998) gave Roy the long overdue recognition he deserved. He spent most of 1999 touring the festival circuit.

Gaines received a W.C. Handy award and Living Blues "Comeback Artist of the Year" award in 1999. Roy's New Frontier Lover album showcases versatility as guitarist, singer and songwriter and treats listeners to a variety of originals penned by Gaines over the past few decades.

with Yvette Freeman
Jazz vocal legend Dinah Washington comes to life in this explosive show featuring the multi- talented  Yvette Freeman, known to millions as nurse Haleh Adams from the popular TV drama ER. Pianist and musical director Lanny Hartley brings in an all-star back up band to provide swinging support.
